Science or Geoscience Societies of Interest to Geosci Students

Every student geoscientist should be a member of at least one professional or scientific society that relates to their interests.

• You should be a member of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG). Membership is free.
• General science societies include the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Sigma Xi.
• The largest broad-based geoscience societies are the Geological Society of America (GSA) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU), both of which have annual meetings that are attended by tens of thousands of geoscientists.
• Associations focused on aspects of applied geoscience include the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geoscientists (AEG), the National Groundwater Association (NGWA), and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).
• General professional organizations for applied geoscientists include the American Institute for Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the Society for Independent Professional Earth Scientists (SIPES).
• More specialized groups of research, academic, and applied geoscientists include the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), the Seismological Society of America (SSA), the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP), and Paleoseismicity.org
