Mapping Our Genetic Heritage

The Genographic Project is a research project in which the National Geographic Society, IBM and the Watt Family Foundation have partnered with anthropologists, molecular biologists, geneticists and others to chart the Human journey over time, using DNA mapping techniques.

For more information about this project, go to the Genographic Project website at https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com

Dr. Vince Cronin has participated in the project by submitting a DNA sample (a mouth scraping called a buccal swab) to map the yDNA of his male ancestors, and by obtaining a swab from his mom to map the mitochondria DNA of his female ancestors. The reports generated by the Genographic Project sketch a journey that began in Africa 50-60,000 years ago and made it to northern Europe by around 30,000 years ago.
